Parametric Design Thinking: Cognitive Models and Styles, Computational Design Processes and Digital Tools
Important Dates
May 9 Submissions due
May 16 Notification of acceptance
21 June 2:00pm-5:30pm Workshop

Workshop Aim:

Within the last decade with the emergence of new parametric design software environments and tools, parametric design has become a seminal medium in the evolution of new processes of digital design in a broad range of design fields. In architecture, design engineering, industrial design, jewelry design and fashion design, among others, parametric design is beginning to impact not only the formal characteristics of recent designs produced in these fields, but also may be said to be creating a new paradigm of design thinking.

Emerging methodologies and tools are contributing to the evolution of cognitive styles of parametric design thinking. In parallel, an emerging body of concepts is being developed to produce a theoretical basis for parametric design; this body of concepts is rapidly becoming the nexus of theoretical production in digital design.

The objective and the challenge of the workshop is to act as a collaborative team for formulating, defining, and relating the key concepts of the field and their inter-relationships in theory and design practices.

The workshop will focus on:
- Cognitive concepts and models of parametric-design thinking
- Computational concepts and models of parametric processes
- Parametric tools and their impact on design thinking
- Research perspectives – from academia and practice
- Pedagogical aspects and educational settings

Submission Information
Short interest statements containing the following information (text no more than 1000 words) should be emailed as a pdf file to the Workshop Chair:
- Name and academic/practice affiliation
- Research interests and focus in parametric design & design thinking
- Research methodology/design methodology experience
- Reference material

The workshop will be organized around three sets of work-sessions + a concluding discussion + documentation session during a half day (3.5 hours). In each work session there will be: Brief introductory presentations on issues, concepts and relationships by participants selected on the basis of their application statements, background experience, and research interests; break-out session for formulating responses; group discussion; documentation.

Workshop Format
Introduction
- General introduction by workshop chairs – 15 min
Collaborative work sessions + documentation – 45 mins each
- Cognitive concepts, theories and research issues
- Computational models of parametric, generative algorithmic mechanisms
- Tools, scripting and coding and their impact on design
- Collaborative session - documentation
Summary and conclusions session
- Formalizing agenda for Parametric Design Thinking.

Please note that all participants will participate in each of the four sessions. In each session, participants will be either presenters, respondents, or responsible for documentation depending upon their interest statements. Depending upon the number of applicants, certain activities may be accomplished in groups.

Attendees at the workshop need to register either as an addition to the DCC'14 conference registration at a cost of £20, or if not registered for the conference at a cost of £40. Please go the main DCC14 conference page and then to Registration to register.
